Kansas City Command News Release

KANSAS CITY - The Kansas City Command began the first day of free agency with a blockbuster deal, signing former National Football League quarterback Nate Davis today. Drafted out of Ball State University in the fifth round by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2009 NFL Draft, the mobile QB with a powerful arm will look to emerge as the Command's starting signal caller for the 2012 Arena Football League season.

Command head coach Danto Barto expects great things from Davis.

"We are extremely excited to have Nate," Barto said. "This kid has loads of talent and sheer athletic ability. He can make every throw you need him to, and he can burn you on the ground, too. I hope our fans are excited. I know I am. Nate is anxious to get to Kansas City."

Davis, 24, is looking forward to joining the Command and playing for Barto.

"I'm very excited they're giving me an opportunity in Kansas City," Davis said. "I'm ready to go out there and show myself."

Davis chose to play in the Arena Football League over offers from other professional leagues.

"I had a chance to go play in the CFL," he said. "But I felt it was a better opportunity for me to play in the AFL. I think it's a good move for me."

Davis made his NFL debut with the 49ers in a preseason home game versus the Oakland Raiders on August 22, 2009. Coming into the game in the third quarter, Davis led the San Francisco offense to three scores in the fourth quarter, including a two-point conversion, to win the game. In the following preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, Davis completed 10 of 15 passes for 132 yards and led two scoring drives in the final quarter, leading the 49ers to a 20-13 victory.

After his stint with the 49ers, the Seattle Seahawks signed Davis to a reserve/future contract on January 11, 2011. After spending time with Seattle, it was reported on July 26, 2011 that he had agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

A starter for all of his three seasons at Ball State University, Davis was the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award as a junior in 2008. He led Ball State to 12 straight victories to start that season before the Cardinals fell to Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference championship game. He finished the year with 3,446 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

As a sophomore, Davis threw for 3,667 yards and 30 touchdowns, both school records. A dual-threat, he added 235 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Against Nebraska, Davis threw for 422 yards, the third-best total in school history.

He started seven games as a true freshman and tallied nearly 2,000 passing yards, the fourth-best total in school history.

Davis finished his Ball State career with a 22-12 record as a starter. He owns the Ball State career records for passing yards and completions. On January 13, 2009, Davis announced that he would forgo his senior season in order to enter the 2009 NFL Draft.

Interestingly, Davis will not be the first in his family to play Arena Football in Kansas City.

His brother, Jose, played quarterback in the AFL as a member of the Kansas City Brigade.
