Kansas City Command News Release

KANSAS CITY- Recognizing the importance of education, the Kansas City Command took part in Graden Elementary's Annual Community Read-in Friday morning at the school's campus in Parkville, MO.

The read-in program invites prominent figures and organizations from around the Kansas City area to read to individual classes of all grade levels, while also sharing advice and personal experiences pertaining to the importance of education.

Command 2011 defensive backs Sergio Gilliam and Christian Wise read to the school's third graders. Graden Elementary Principal Dr. LuAnn Halverstadt was quick to illustrate the importance of having a professional sports franchise at a community event such as this.

"Professional athletes are role models for students," Dr. Halverstadt said. "Anytime we can bring in positive role models from the community, especially when they are sports figures that kids tend to emulate, I think the message of how education opens doors and creates career opportunities has a better chance of hitting home. It means a lot to our students for these people to take time out of their busy schedules to support them and the school."

Dr. Halverstadt also commented on how the read-in has grown throughout the years and the direction the program is constantly striving to head toward.

"What we try to do is bring in different community figures every year," Dr. Halverstadt said. "We have some that are similar, but we bring in different people to expand our reputation. It's important for us to create and maintain relationships so in order to enhance programs here at Graden. We're excited to now have a working relationship with the Kansas City Command, and we look forward to building on this relationship as time goes on."
