Washington Spirit Will Host Chicago Red Stars in NWSL Semifinal Friday

BOYDS, Md- The Washington Spirit will be hosting Chicago Red Stars in the first ever NWSL semifinal playoff match held at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Friday, September 30 at 8 p.m ET.

After clinching one of the top two spots in the 4th NWSL season several weeks ago and heading into the final weekend of play with a one point lead overall, the Spirit ended up in 2nd place after losing to Chicago 1-3 on Saturday night and being overtaken by Portland Thorns FC by two points following their 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday.

The Spirit and the Red Stars have split their matches this season, but the Spirit owns a dominating record lifetime over the Chicago side with 6 wins, 3 losses, and a draw, with only one of those losses coming at home back on July 10, 2013.

Prior to Saturday's loss, the Spirit had a seven game run against Chicago with 6 wins and a draw, scoring 10 goals while only allowing three. The run included the S pirit's 2-0 win on July 9 at the Maryland SoccerPlex with goals from Estefania Banini and Katie Stengel.

Portland Thorns FC will host Western New York Flash in the other NWSL Semifinal on Sunday, October 2 at 5 p.m. ET. The winners will advance to the 2016 NWSL Championship at the pre-determined site of BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sunday, October 9 at 5 p.m. ET and will be televised on FOX Sports 1.
