Washington, D.C. - The Washington Spirit has signed midfielder Marissa Sheva to the active roster as a short-term COVID-19 replacement player, the club announced today.
Sheva previously played for the NWSL's Utah Royals FC in 2020 after a brief tenure with Deportivo Alavés Gloriosas in Primera División, the top-tier women's league in Spain.
The Sellersville, Pennsylvania native earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors twice in her final two seasons at Penn State. In her senior season, Sheva netted three game-winning goals for the Nittany Lions. Sheva tallied 13 goals and nine assists in her four seasons in State College, seeing playing time in 92 matches, 60 of which were starts.
The Washington Spirit will travel up north this weekend to take on NJ/NY Gotham FC on Saturday night at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. The match will be the second of four in a ten-day stretch for the Spirit. After Saturday night's contest, Washington will head to Bridgeview, Illinois to play the Chicago Red Stars next Wednesday night.
