Warthogs split DH with Lynchburg on Wednesday

Winston-Salem, NC – The Winston-Salem Warthogs (22-17) split a doubleheader with Lynchburg on Wednesday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Hillcats scored three runs with two out in the ninth and won game one, 5-3. The Warthogs broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with two runs in the seventh, on the way to a 4-1 win in game two. It was the fourth DH between the two teams in past eight days.

In game one Yurendell Decaster hit a two-out pinch hit homerun in the top of the ninth off of Warthogs' reliever Ryan Meaux to give Lynchburg a 5-3 lead. Meaux then hit Nate McLouth and the benches cleared. No punches were thrown and no ejections were handed out. The Warthogs got a leadoff double by Mike Morse in the bottom of the ninth, but did not score.

The Warthogs took the lead, 1-0 on an RBI ground out by Jeremy Reed. Lynchburg tied the game at 1 after Jose Bautista walked and scored when Warthogs' shortstop Mike Morse misplayed a Brandon Chaves ground ball. The Hillcats took the lead 2-1 in the top of the third on a solo homerun by Walter Young. The hogs tied the game at 2 in the fourth. Jeremy Reed doubled and scored on a Daylan Holt sac fly. Holt had another sac fly in the eighth to put the Warthogs up 3-2.

Franklin Francisco got a no decision in the loss. Francisco tossed eight innings and gave up just two runs on five hits. Jeff Miller earned the win in relief for Lynchburg, while Melqui Torres garnered the save.

In game two the Warthogs scored two runs to break a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Normand Martel singled in Casey Rogowski. Martel scored on an RBI ground out by Ruddy Yan. The Warthogs scored an insurance run in the eighth after an RBI single by Rogowski. Winston-Salem took a 1-1 lead in the first after Ruddy Yan singled and scored on a Jeremy Reed double to left. The Hillcats scored their only run of game two in the sixth. Jeff Keppinger walked and scored after a stolen base, error, and wild pitch.

Rolando Garza won his first game, as he was the pitcher of record when the hogs took the lead in the 7th. Josh Fields earned his first save. Steve Fitch (2-3) suffered the loss in game two for the Hillcats.

The final game of the six game series will be Thursday night at 7:15pm. Jose Lopez (0-0, 5.40) will pitch for Lynchburg. The Warthogs will give the ball to Brandon O'Neil (0-0, 6.06). All the play by play will be heard on 600/1200am WSJS and on the internet at www.warthogs.com.
