Warthogs Announce 2007 Coaching Staff

WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Winston-Salem Warthogs, the Advanced Class-A Affiliates of the Chicago White Sox announced their coaching staff for the 2007 season. Tim Blackwell, who played 10 years in the major leagues, will serve as the manager of the Warthogs. Wes Clements was named the hitting coach for Winston-Salem, while J.R. Perdew will return as the pitching coach. Josh Fallin will once again serve as the Warthogs head trainer and Raymond Smith returns as the conditioning coach.

"We are extremely excited about having a manager with 10 years of big league playing experience and 12 years of managing experience to share with our players," said Ryan Manuel, General Manager of the Winston-Salem Warthogs. "Tim will make a great addition to the Warthogs staff, both on the field and in the Winston-Salem community."

Blackwell was drafted as a catcher by the Boston Red Sox in the 13th round of the 1970 amateur draft. On his way to the major leagues, he played in Winston-Salem during the 1972 season. Blackwell made his big league debut behind the plate with the Red Sox in 1974, while playing in 44 games and hitting .246 for the season. Blackwell played 10 seasons in the major leagues with Boston (1974-75), Philadelphia (1976-77), Chicago Cubs (1978-81) and Montreal (1977, 1982-1983). For his career, he hit .228 with six home runs and 80 RBI while playing in 426 games. In 2006, Blackwell served as the pitching coach for the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the Independent Golden Baseball League. He has posted a 693-771 record in 12 season as a minor-league manager.

Clements spent 11 seasons playing professional baseball in the minor leagues. While playing in the Houston Astros organization in the early 1980's, Clements was considered a top prospect. Although he never registered a major league at-bat, Clements hit 173 homeruns with 664 RBI in his minor league career. Perdew returns as the pitching coach for his fifth season in Winston-Salem and 12th overall in the White Sox organization. Before joining the White Sox, Perdew spent seven seasons at Allegany (Md.) Junior College as the pitching coach, where his teams appeared in the Junior College World Series in five of his seven seasons.

Fallin, the 2005 Carolina League Trainer of the Year, enters his seventh season as the head trainer in Winston-Salem and ninth season overall with the White Sox. Smith enters his second season as the conditioning coach for the Warthogs and third season overall in the White Sox organization. He joined the White Sox after serving in a similar capacity in the Atlanta Braves organization.

The Winston-Salem Warthogs open their season on April 5, 2007 at Ernie Shore Field, when they welcome in the 2006 Carolina League Champion Kinston Indians for a three-game series beginning on Thirsty Thursday.
