Warriors Hand Pats 5-2 Loss

Moose Jaw, Sask. - The Moose Jaw Warriors handed the Regina Pats a 5-2 loss on Friday inside the Moose Jaw Events Centre despite a late pushback by the Pats in the third period.

The Pats trailed 3-0 after two and were able to get as close as 3-2 in the final stanza. Zane Rowan got the Pats on the board early and Borya Valis sent home his 12th of the season to bring Regina within one midway through the third. The Warriors added two more late to put the game out of reach.

Sam Oremba would stay hot, picking up two primary assists and Kelton Pyne made 37 saves. The Pats registered a season-high 49 shots on net and lost in regulation for the first time since December 9, snapping their four game point-streak.

Brayden Schuurman scored twice for the Warriors while Atley Calvert (1G-2A) and Jagger Firkus (3A) led the way with three point games. Kalem Parker (1G-1A) and Ethan Semeniuk rounded out the scoring for the Warriors and Jackson Unger made 47 saves in their second straight win.

First Period

1-0 Warriors at 52 seconds - Kalem Parker (3), assisted by Jagger Firkus & Brady Ness // Firkus' shot is blocked in front of the Pats net but the puck went to a streaking Parker who deposited it past Pyne to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

Second Period

2-0 Warriors at 5:44 - Atley Calvert (21), assisted by Jagger Firkus // Firkus picked the pocket of a Pats player, skated behind the Pats goal, and sent a pass to Calvert who fired it top-shelf past Pyne to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

3-0 Warriors at 10:57 - Brayden Schuurman (8), assisted by Atley Calvert & Kalem Parker (PP) // Calvert's cross-ice pass got to Schuurman, and he was able to get a shot past a sprawling Pyne to increase the Warriors lead to three at 3-0.

Third Period

3-1 Pats at 2:25 - Zane Rowan (2), assisted by Sam Oremba & Tye Spencer // Oremba carried the puck deep into the Warriors zone, wrapped it around and sent a pass to Rowan who tapped it home to get the Pats on the board now trailing 3-1.

3-2 Pats at 12:09 - Borya Valis (12), assisted by Sam Oremba & Parker Berge (PP) // Oremba carried the puck into the Warriors zone to Unger's glove side, and he sent a cross-ice pass to Valis who fired it home to get the Pats to within one at 3-2.

4-2 Warriors at 16:29 - Ethan Semeniuk (5), assisted by Atley Calvert & Jagger Firkus // A turnover in the Pats zone, and Calvert spun and sent a shot toward the Pats net that was tipped past Pyne by Semeniuk to give the Warriors a 4-2 lead.

5-2 Warriors at 17:08 - Brayden Schuurman (9), assisted by Martin Rysavy & Rilen Kovacevic // The initial shot is stopped but Schuurman found the rebound and sent it past Pyne to all but seal the deal at 5-2 late in the third period.

JUST NOTES

Zane Rowan scored his second of the season and the first time in 17 games. His last goal was on November 3 when he scored in a 6-1 win over the visiting Wheat Kings.

Sam Oremba picked up a pair of assists, and has four points (2G-2A) in two games since beginning the second half schedule. He also has 11 points (3G-8A) in his last eight games.

Tye Spencer had an assist and has points (1G-1A) in back-to-back games.

The Pats had their most shots on goal in a game this season with 49 (the previous high was 38 on December 27 at Brandon).

Parker Berge grabbed an assist, and now has 12 points (4G-8A) in his last eight games.

Borya Valis scored a third period goal to extend his point streak to nine games in which he has 14 points (6G-8A). He has also scored in five of his last six games.
