Indianapolis Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN-- The Indianapolis Ice announced today that the team has signed forwards Corey Waring and Brad Patterson to contracts. Warings' rights were obtained by the Ice at the conclusion of last year from the El Paso Buzzards to complete a January trade which sent centerman Chris MacKenzie to El Paso. Patterson will be making his full season professional debut with Indianapolis.
Waring, 26, is coming off his best pro season as he finished third on the Buzzards in scoring with 60 points (27G, 33A). Scoring was done in every fashion for the Brantford, Ontario native as ten of his 27 goals came on special teams, including a league-leading five shorthanded goals. He also played in 11 playoff games this past season with El Paso and posted five points (3G, 2A) and 14 penalty minutes.
"Corey is obviously a huge asset to this team," said Ice Head Coach Ken McRae. "He is your prototypical all-around forward as he skates well, kills penalties, plays on the power play and is solid defensively."
The multi-dimensional forward out of Western Michigan University (CCHA) will be making his second stint with the Ice as he was a member of the team's 2000 Miron Cup Championship Team. He made his professional debut with the Icemen following the completion of his senior season at WMU and played in six playoff games. After earning a ring with Indy, he has spent his last two years pro with El Paso and New Orleans of the ECHL. His two-year numbers consist of 103 points (46G, 57A) and 76 penalty minutes in 120 games.
"Getting Corey signed has been a priority of ours since we acquired his rights," said Ice General Manager Larry Linde. "It took a bit longer than anticipated (Waring has spent most of this summer in a remote area of the Yukon Territory), but it's well worth the wait. We were able to get this done because we were both patient and persistent and that's how we'll continue to approach things."
Patterson, 21, arrives in Indianapolis after playing four years of NCAA Division I hockey with the Michigan Tech Huskies of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Last season, he posted 15 points (3G, 12A) in 36 games of work. He finished off the year by playing in two pro games with Knoxville (UHL) where he notched an assist.
"Brad is a crafty centerman who played a regular role in all four of his years at Michigan Tech," said McRae. "Scouting reports have indicated that he is a very skilled forward who could be even better molded for the pro game."
The young centerman's best season was his junior year in which he was second on the Huskies in scoring with 22 points (6G, 16A). Overall, his four-year numbers at the school included 61 points (14G, 47A) and 74 penalty minutes in 143 games.
The Ice kicks off its 15th year of hockey when the team hosts the Tulsa Oilers on Friday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m. from the Pepsi Coliseum. Season ticket and advertising packages are now on sale. For more information, contact the Ice office at (317) 925-4423.
