York Revolution News Release

It was nearly 50 years ago that Lancaster and York last met on a professional baseball diamond, when the Lancaster Red Roses took on the York White Roses during the 1959 Eastern League season. However, the rivalry will be renewed in 2007 when the Lancaster Barnstormers and the York Revolution meet 18 times in the "War of the Roses" series, presented by Engle Printing and Publishing.

"At Engle Printing & Publishing Company, we're excited to see the fresh talent of the new York Revolution baseball team match up against the defending Atlantic League-champion Lancaster Barnstormers," said Candace Grimme of Engle. "We're sure this new rivalry will make for some exciting games and will be a lot of fun for fans of both teams."

The Barnstormers and Revolution will play nine games each in Lancaster and York during the upcoming season, with the winner of the season series gaining control of the "War of the Roses" Community Cup, not to mention year-round bragging rights. The first battle in Lancaster will be on Friday, May 18 at Clipper Magazine Stadium, while the Revolution will host the Barnstormers for the first time at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Friday, July 13.

During the entire first series between the clubs in each city, and for the first game of each subsequent series, the Barnstormers will wear 1958 Red Roses vintage jerseys, with the Revolution sporting 1955 White Roses vintage jerseys. Each team's game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off for charity following the last home game in Lancaster and York, respectively.

A press conference will be held next Wednesday, April 4, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Moon Dancer Winery in Wrightsville, located near the Lancaster/York County line. The Community Cup, along with "War of the Roses" signage and logos, will be unveiled at the event. Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray, York Mayor John Brenner, and representatives of both teams - including the mascots - will be on hand to make a series of exciting announcements related to the "War of the Roses" rivalry. Detailed information regarding the press conference will be released early next week.

The south-central Pennsylvania cities of York and Lancaster have a historical rivalry in all sporting events, from the high school level to professional ranks. As both cities are named after the English cities of York and Lancaster, their former baseball teams were named for the opposing sides of the War of the Roses. Just as in the English battles, the York White Roses and the Lancaster Red Roses fought intense baseball matches throughout their existence. With the addition of the York Revolution to the Atlantic League, tradition will continue as Lancaster and York annually battle for Susquehanna supremacy.
