Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas â For five innings, Wandy Rodriguez threw his best baseball of the year.
That was fortunate for the Round Rock Express, because that's all Mother Nature would allow.
Rodriguez gave up only one run in five innings and the Round Rock Express pounded out 11 hits to beat the Midland RockHounds, 4-1, before torrential rain truncated the game after 4.5 innings.
Things weren't looking so rosy for Rodriguez (8-1) after Brian Sellier took his first pitch down the right field line for a home run. That was all Midland (36-37, 1-2 in the second half) would get, though.
Rodriguez settled down after that and after three innings had thrown only 34 pitches, with 29 for strikes.
"I think that kind of jumpstarted him," manager Jackie Moore said. "He certainly got his act together after that."
The Express (47-26, 2-1) answered Sellier in the bottom with five singles that turned into two runs. Junior Zamora and David Matranga drove in the runs.
Round Rock extended the lead in the fourth on a Charlton Jimerson RBI triple and a hard grounder by Jon Topolski.
Heavy rains came after that, halting the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The rain delay lasted 51 minutes before a saturated field and ominous signs on the weather radar forced the game to be called.
The series will be Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
