Walla Walla Sweets News Release

CORVALLIS, Or. - When Corvallis Knights' starter Chris Haddeland delivered a hanging pitch to Parker Osborne on the second at-bat of the game that left the park for a home run, it appeared that the Walla Walla Sweets were destined to have the upper hand.

Unfortunately that was not the case Saturday, as the Knights went on to score runs in every inning except the second and the sixth to beat the Sweets, 13-3.

Throughout the game, the Sweets put together good at-bats, accumulating ten hits on the evening. But the majority were left stranded on base, and after drawing plenty of walks in the previous series against Kelowna, earned only one in the series opener against Corvallis.

Additionally, starter Jesse Houser (1-1) was not at his best, allowing seven runs, four earned, over four innings pitched while walking two and striking out five.

And once again, errors game to the forefront defensively, as the Sweets committed a season-high eight defensive miscues on the night.

Omar Porras made his second appearance of the season in relief of Houser in the fifth inning, where two errors and a wild pitch allowed the Knights to put two more runs on the board and extend their lead to 9-2. Porras would recover to pitch a perfect sixth, but gave up an additional run in the seventh on a Jackson Ruckert RBI double.

Hans Hansen struggled in the eighth, yielding a two-run homer to Kevin Kline and another run via two singles and another Sweets error.

Mike Gallegos was the hitting leader of the night for Corvallis, driving in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Dane Lund, Jackson Soto and Kline also added two hits each for the Knights, while Michael Lucarelli and Joe Duffin each provided home runs of their own.

For the Sweets, Osborne drove in two runs, and Andrew Mendenhall, J.J. Robinson and Cooper Hummel had two hits each, but the club as a whole had difficulty converting hits into runs on this particular night.

Though he allowed nine hits over six innings, Haddeland (0-1) limited the Sweets to two runs while striking out nine.

Sean Eberhardt took over on the mound to begin the seventh, allowing just one run over the next two innings, and Merrick Patito faced the minimum three batters in the ninth to complete the victory for the Knights.

In yet another stroke of bad luck for the Sweets, shortstop John Skrbec was removed from the game after colliding with Osborne in shallow left field while chasing a fly ball in the bottom of the seventh. He will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

The Sweets will get another chance against the Knights on Sunday, when the two teams face off at Goss Stadium in Corvallis at 6:05 PM.
