
Walla Walla Drops Game Two in Bellingham 9-3

BELLINGHAM, WA - The Bellingham Bells rode a 12-hit offensive output to win game two of the weekend series against Walla Walla 9-3 Friday night at Joe Martin Field. Sweets right-hander Danny Zandona collected the loss in his first start of the season.
The Bells started the scoring with four early runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Ryan Yamane singled to right field with one out as third baseman Alex Calbick followed with a base hit to left. A third consecutive single from catcher R.J. Ybarra drove both runners home for a 2-0 Bellingham lead. Left fielder Chris Beall drew a walked two hitters later to move Ybarra into scoring position before right fielder Jack Meggs drove in two more RBI with a triple to the right field corner. With the Bells leading 4-0, Zandona induced a ground out to end the inning.
Bellingham repeated its offensive output with four more runs in the fourth inning. Meggs doubled to right field with one out before designated hitter Aaron Sandefur was hit by a pitch. Second baseman Steven Leverett notched a single to load the bases before center fielder Johnny Sewald walked to drive in a run. With Yamane at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Sandefur to score from third base before Yamane followed with an RBI base hit to center field, giving the Bells a 7-0 advantage. That ended Zandona's night as left-hander Drew Christina came on in relief to face Calbick, who grounded out, but drove in a run to put Bellingham in front 8-0. Zandona ended his night allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work, taking his first loss of the year.
Walla Walla fought back in the fifth when center fielder Jono Herkins notched his first hit in a Sweets uniform, an infield single up the middle to lead off the inning. Two hitters later, designated hitter Renae Martinez reached on an error at second base, advancing Herkins to third. Third baseman Jarod Gonzales sent both men home to score with a double to the right field wall for the Sweets first two runs, making it an 8-2 ball game before catcher Dom Miroglio flew out to end the frame.
Bellingham tacked on a ninth run in the eighth when Beall led off the inning with a single. He advanced a base on a fielder's choice ground out and came home to score on Leverett's single to center field. Walla Walla got a run back in the ninth inning as pinch hitter Scott Silva reached on a throwing error, coming home to score on a two-out single from third baseman John Skrbec, but that ended the scoring at 9-3.
Christina was strong in relief, only allowing a run on four hits, while striking out four and walking a man in 4.2 innings on the mound.
With the loss, the Sweets fall to 11-9 in the West Coast League North Division, just two games out of first place. Bellingham jumps to 1/2 game behind the first place Victoria HarbourCats at 11-6. Right-hander Nate Cole took the win for the Bells, not allowing any earned runs while striking out two in five innings of work.
Game three of the series against Bellingham wraps up Saturday at Joe Martin Field. Left-hander Sean Silva is scheduled to throw the first pitch for Walla Walla at 7:05 p.m.
