
Walks Not Enough in WhiteWings Loss

Edinburg - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (10-11) drew nine walks, but only one of those runners scored as they fell to the Edinburg Roadrunners (9-12) 5-4 tonight at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The WhiteWings broke a scoreless tie against Pedro Flores in the top of the fourth. With one out, Alberto Cruz singled, Joaquin Rodriguez doubled and Welinson Baez was intentionally walked to load the bases. Justin Holloway hit a grounded to short that was bobbled by Angel Reyes, allowing everyone to be safe as Cruz scored. Casey Allen then drew a walk to force in Rodriguez, making it 2-0.
The Roadrunners took the lead in the bottom of the fourth against Reymond Cruz. Vincent Blue led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Hereaud. Bryon Smith then walked and Osiel Flores doubled. Cruz intentionally walked Angel Reyes to load the bases. A pair of passed balls allowed Smith and Flores to score and moved to Reyes to third while McGuire walked. Amado German then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.
The WhiteWings got one back in the sixth. Baez led off with a walk and Ryan Kottke followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt put the runners in scoring position, Brian Martin replaced Flores and gave up an RBI-single to Stephen Ward to make it 4-3.
The WhiteWings tied it in the seventh. Cruz led off with a single and stole second. With two outs, Kottke hit an RBI-single against Kelley Casares (2-0).
The Roadrunners took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth against Ryan Dixon (1-1). Smith led off with a single and Flores walked. Reyes put a bunt down, but Smith was thrown out at third. McGuire followed with an RBI-double to make it 5-4.
Raymond Silva pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
The WhiteWings play game two of this four-game series against the Roadrunners tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Right-hander Sendy Vasquez (1-2) will face right-hander Eric Montoya (2-0).
