Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (July 29, 2009) - Acting as its own worst enemy, the Brockton Rox lost the New Jersey Jackals on Wednesday afternoon in Little Falls, NJ by committing three first-inning errors and walking seven batters in the first three innings.
Despite falling behind 6-1, Brockton managed to pull within a run as late as the seventh inning before dropping its fifth straight loss to New Jersey dating back to June 12th. RHP Freddy Flores struggled in his fifth start for the Rox, walking seven batters in the first three innings and committing one of the first inning errors.
Despite his early struggles, Flores persevered through five innings, and worked through his toughest jams with minimal damage. On the verge of letting the game get out of hand in the second inning, Flores walked the bases loaded, but induced a ground ball double play which allowed one run to score. He then forced SS Mike DeJesus to ground out to second base for the final out of the inning.
In the fifth inning, he walked the first two batters, but again received a strong effort from his defense including a double play and walked out of the inning with no runs allowed.
Brockton's offense came alive late against New Jersey starter RHP Stuart Pomeranz. RF Jud Thigpen started the sixth inning with a solo home run to cut the score to 6-2. Later, 2B Melvin Falu and 3B Phillip Cuadrado each singled and C Jon Gossard doubled to plate both and narrow the gap to 6-4.
In the seventh inning, DH Palmer Karr doubled and later scored on a throwing error which brought the Rox back to within one run at 6-5.
However New Jersey added an insurance run on a suicide squeeze bunt executed by RF Quentin Davis which plated 1B Myron Leslie. The Jackals' bullpen then shut down the Rox in the eighth and ninth innings. LHP Rusty Tucker earned his second save in as many days and his league-leading 16th of the season by recording the final four outs.
Brockton and New Jersey conclude the three-game series on Thursday at Yogi Berra Stadium at 7:05 PM. Brockton will start LHP Fraser Robinson (5-2, 4.33 ERA) against New Jersey's LHP Isaac Pavlik (5-3, 3.74 ERA).
