Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DUNEDIN, FL (July 17, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle rolled out another first round draft pick on Monday night at Knology Park. Kyle Waldrop, the third first round pick (25th overall) by the Twins in 2004 made his Miracle debut and was solid, guiding the Miracle to a 6-4 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Knology Park.
The 20-year-old Waldrop was efficient, not allowing the best hitting team in the Florida State League to put up a big inning. Waldrop went 7.0 strong innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out two in earning his first victory in the FSL. The Miracle needed a big inning of their own to make a winner out of Waldrop and for the second consecutive game they did that.
With the Miracle trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Brandon Roberts reached on an infield single. He was 2-4 on the evening and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. J.R. Taylor followed with a walk and David Winfree tied the game with a two run double to left. Brock Peterson then singled to center that scored Winfree, to make it 5-4, and Peterson advanced to second on the misplay by center fielder Aaron Mathews. The Miracle finished the scoring when Steve Tolleson doubled home Peterson.
The Blue Jays struck first with an unearned run in the second. Cory Patton led off with a single to center. He stole second and with two outs scored when Jacob Butler's grounder to short was thrown low to first by Taylor and Peterson couldn't handle it. Peterson was charged with the error.
The Miracle, who improved to 12-11 in the second half, the first time they have been over .500 since they were 2-1, took the lead in the third when Erold Andrus hit a hanging breaking ball over the right field wall, a solo shot, his third of the season. With one out and Taylor on at first he went to second on a balk and scored on a two out single by Peterson.
Waldrop gave the lead up in the bottom of the inning when he issued up a pair of solo homers. Carlo Cota blasted a homer to left, his first of the season. With two outs Eric Arnold hit one to right-center, his second of the season to make it 3-2 Blue Jays,
The Blue Jays added one more in the fifth when Arnold doubled home Cota with two outs. That set up the come from behind win for the Miracle, who beat the Blue Jays for the second straight night after losing the first seven games at Knology Park.
The Miracle now head home for an eight game homestand beginning Tuesday night with a four game set against the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Asleton (4-2, 4.14) to the hill.
