Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Vero Beach, FL) - Blake DeWitt hit a two-run home run in the 8th and a game-winning single in the bottom of the 9th to scoot the Dodgers past the Brevard County Manatees 7-6 Monday night at Holman Stadium. Vero Beach scored three runs in the 9th to squeak out the victory and finish 4-3 on the homestand. The Dodgers travel to Sarasota Tuesday for a 7:00 PM game.

In the decisive 9th, Sergio Pedroza reached on an infield hit to start the inning and Adolfo Gonzalez hit a low-liner to left. Dodger manager Luis Salazar then called off pinch-hitter Cole Bruce and let Ryder Mathias bat for himself. After show bunt, Mathias swatted a bloop single to left to load the bases with no outs.

Jamie Hoffman hit a sacrifice fly to score Pedroza then Xavier Paul sinlged in Gonzalez to tie the score. One out later - and with two strikes - DeWitt rapped a single that deflected off the mound and went into center. Outfielder Charlie Fermaint's throw was up the third base line and Mathias slid away from the tag to score the winning run.

Brevard County had built a solid lead earlier in the game. The Manatees plated three runs in the second off starter Blake Johnson. Ryan Crew had an RBI single and Freddy Parejo added a triple to score Crew. Parejo came home after Fermaint was hit by a pitch and got caught in a rundown on a pickoff attempt. Fermaint was eventually tagged out but Parejo scored before the play to make it 3-0.

The Manatees picked up another run in the 5th when Fermaint led off with a single and stole second. He eventually came in on Carlos Corporan's infield single. Brevard went on to load the bases, but Johnson coaxed Brendan Katin into a fly ball to right that ended the threat.

Paul then blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. It was a towering blow to right field, easily clearing the palm trees and the grass berm behind it. That pulled the Dodgers within 4-2. The Manatees plated two runs in the top of the 8th, but DeWitt countered with his opposite-field two-run homer to answer in the bottom half.

DeWitt finished 2-5 and ended the 7-game homestand with four home runs. That puts his team-leading season total at 15. He also leads the club with 50 RBI.
