Voting Underway For US Airways/ECHL Man of the Year

March 18, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. – The East Coast Hockey League in association with US Airways announced on Tuesday that nominations are now being accepted for the US Airways/ECHL Man of the Year Award, presented annually to a player for off-ice contributions to charity and the community.

Fans can submit their nominations for US Airways/ECHL Man of the Year online at www.echl.com, the official web site of the East Coast Hockey League.

The winner will receive two roundtrip tickets from US Airways, the Official Airline of the ECHL, and a trophy.

Ryan Stewart of the Greenville Grrrowl was selected as the inaugural winner in 2002. Stewart received the most votes as a result of his regular visits to the Shriner's Hospital, the Greenville Hospital System's Children's Hospital and his involvement with the March of Dimes. Stewart assisted the Meyer Center, a school for special children, and teamed with a local senior center to raise money to assist needy families. He raised more $5,000 to help offset medical expenses incurred by the family of Savannah Grace Duke, whom Stewart befriended during a hospital visit.

"We have to take advantage of the position we're in and the time we have to make a difference in people's lives," said Stewart upon being named 2002 US Airways/ECHL Man of the Year. "If we can raise awareness or help raise funds through the fan support we receive then we should do it. There is more going on in life than hockey and we should always take the time to make a difference in someone's life."
