Von Schamann Shoves as Revs Salvage Finale in Charleston

(Charleston, WV): Duke von Schamann was masterful in a spot start as the York Revolution salvaged their series finale with the Charleston Dirty Birds, taking the nightcap of Thursday's doubleheader, 6-2 at Appalachian Power Park. It was a big bounce back for the Revs who snapped a three-game skid after an 11-1 defeat in the opener. The Revs now return home to kick off a 12-game homestand beginning Friday night.
Von Schamann (5-4) became the seventh member of the 20-win club in Revolution history, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings. He walked none, struck out a season-high six batters, picked off a runner, and retired nine straight at one point.
York scored in the top of the first inning as JC Encarnacion led off the game with a double to left and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Yefri Perez. Encarnacion raced home on a passed ball for the game's first run. The Revs loaded the bases and would have scored more but Connor Lien was ruled out on a disputed call at first base on a ground out to end the inning.
Charleston tied it in the bottom of the first as Alfredo Gonzalez tagged a solo homer to left center, but that was the only blemish on von Schamann's line all night.
York went back in front with a two-out rally in the second as Encarnacion hustled out a double to left-center and scored on a single through the right side by Perez for a 2-1 lead.
The Revs scored two more in the third, loading the bases on singles by Nellie Rodriguez, Carlos Franco, and Lien which set up a Jack Kenley sac fly to center. Another run crossed on an error by shortstop Diego Goris as the Revs built a 4-1 advantage.
York added insurance runs in the sixth on a Rodriguez bases loaded walk, and in the seventh as Lenin Rodriguez drove a two-out RBI double to deep right, plating Melky Mesa who had led off the inning with a double of his own to deep left field.
Tuck Tucker handled a scoreless sixth out of the Revs bullpen, leaving the bases loaded for his 16th scoreless outing in 18 appearances to begin his pro career. He worked around a walk and two singles as it marked just his second time allowing more than one hit in an appearance.
Charleston scored an unearned run on a throwing error by reliever Roniel Raudes in the seventh, but Jim Fuller entered with the tying run on deck and struck out Anfernee Seymour looking and retired Nick Heath on a ground out to secure his 12th save of the season and record 41st of his Revs career.
The performance in the nightcap marked quite the turnaround after the Revs were blown out in the opener. Dirty Birds cleanup hitter Edwin Espinal had a record day, going 4-for-4 with three homers, a double, and eight RBI, the most in one game by an opposing hitter in Revs history. He also became the first opposing batter to slug three home runs in one game against the Revs.
Espinal's first of the day, a two-run shot to left, opened the scoring in the first inning.
Troy Stokes Jr. led off the third by drilling the first pitch out of the park to left as his 10th of the season cut the deficit to 2-1. Stokes Jr. became the sixth Revs batter to reach double digits in homers this season, one shy of a franchise record.
Charleston responded in a major way in the bottom of the third, however, as Espinal launched a two-run homer to right center and Devon Torrence drove a two-run shot of his own to left center, just the third home run of his pro career and first since 2019.
Espinal added an RBI double down the left field line in the fourth and a three-run homer to right center in the fifth while Seymour contributed an RBI double earlier in the fifth inning, rounding out the Dirty Birds scoring.
Charleston starter Derrick Adams (5-6) tossed his first career complete game, limiting York to one run on four hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven, retiring 14 of his first 15 batters faced. He has allowed just four runs on 11 hits over 19.0 innings in his last three starts and has now walked just two while striking out 15 in his last two outings.
The Revs finish the season series against the Dirty Birds with a 7-5 mark. The win in the nightcap also moves the Revs closer to a pair of major milestones as it marked the 996th victory in franchise history and the 594th for Revs manager Mark Mason.
