Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

HILLSBORO, Oregon - Previously 0-5 in Hillsboro, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes finally got over the hump in a 5-1 win against the Hillsboro Hops on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Hillsboro got its only run of the game early in the bottom of the first as catcher Luke Lowery singled to left field to bring in center fielder Marcus Wilson.

The Volcanoes' offense exploded for a five-run second inning with ten batters coming up to the plate. Second baseman Kevin Rivera got things started with a single to right field to bring in first baseman Ryan Kirby. Catcher Zack Bowers then doubled to left field to bring in shortstop Ryan Howard and Rivera. Center fielder Bryan Reynolds then doubled to left-center field to bring in Bowers.

The final run of the game came when right fielder Heath Quinn got an infield single to the shortstop to bring in designated hitter Ashford Fulmer.

This was all the Volcanoes needed to coast the rest of the way to a 5-1 victory.

Lefty Matt Krook (1-1) picked up the win for the Volcanoes after only allowing four hits over five and two-thirds innings. To go along with his strong performance, Krook also struck out five and had only one walk.

The Volcanoes used three relievers to go the rest of the way: CJ Gettman, Jeff Burke and Patrick Ruotolo. Combined, they only surrendered one hit.

Junior Garcia (1-1) took the loss for the Hops as he pitched five innings, allowing five runs off eight hits, striking out three and allowing one walk.

While most of the Volcanoes squad will have a few days off, four Volcanoes are making an appearance in the 2016 Northwest League All-Star game. John Riley (C), Kevin Rivera (INF), Ashford Fulmer (OF) and Gio Brusa (OF) will represent Salem-Keizer in the All-Star Game on August 2 at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah.

The Volcanoes' next game is Thursday, August 4, at 6:35 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium against the Spokane Indians This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
