Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Oregon - After dropping the first two games to the Eugene Emeralds 11-5 and 12-4 in games one and two, respectively, the Volcanoes lost game three, 7-4.
The game started off as a pitchers' duel, with Cease striking out six and Williams recording seven. Both teams struck out a combined 24 times in the game - just under half of the total amount of outs in a ball game of 54.
Volcanoes starter Williams tossed 5.0 brilliant innings in which he struck out seven batters and only allowed one run, a positive sight after the Volcanoes gave up 23 runs in the two previous games.
The Em's struck first in the second inning after third baseman Wladimir Galindo led off the inning with a double and a two-out single by Marcus Mastrobouni scored Galindo.
Salem-Keizer got a run back in the third inning. Left fielder Gustavo Cabrera scored after leading off the inning with a double. Cabrera then got to third as second baseman Manuel Geraldo grounded out to third and Cabrera took off for third on the throw from Galindo. Cabrera slid into third as the throw from Emeralds' first baseman got away from the third baseman. Cabrera walked home on the error to tie the game.
Eugene scored four runs in the sixth and two runs in the eighth, slapping three home runs in the two innings.
The Volcanoes rallied in the eighth inning with a leadoff walk and a fielder's choice error putting two runners on for Salem-Keizer. A double to left center by right fielder Heath Quinn plated both runners to make the score 7-3.
Shortstop Ryan Howard then hit a broken bat single up the middle from which Quinn was able to score from second, bringing the score to 7-4 at the end of the eighth.
Cabrera led things off with a single in the ninth, attempting to start a rally, but the Volcanoes could not get enough momentum to warrant a threat to the Eugene Emeralds. The Volcanoes dropped the series, losing all three games to the Emeralds.
The Volcanoes travel to Everett to play the AquaSox in a five-game series starting August 12. Melvin Adon will start the opener against the AquaSox - the second and final series meeting this year between the two clubs. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium.
