Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes' Volcanoes Stadium was ranked 4th Best in the Nation, and as the # 1 Stadium West of the Mississippi, by Baseball America. The ranking was announced during the Baseball Winter Meetings in New Orleans and is part of a feature story in Baseball America's most recent publication dated December 22, 2003 - January 18, 2004, that is on sale at newsstand's across the nation until January 18.
The selection were based on Baseball America's conversations with people throughout the game, as well as factoring in the publications own opinions. Volcanoes Stadium was ranked 4th, in the Class A Short Season Classification, behind KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, New York, Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland, and Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
"We're delighted to have Volcanoes Stadium recognized and ranked so highly by Baseball America," said Jerry Walker, President of the Volcanoes, who was in New Orleans participating in the Meetings as a featured speaker when the announcement was made. "Baseball America is one of the top baseball publications in the world and that makes this ranking truly special. This is something the entire community can be proud of," concluded Walker.
Volcanoes Stadium, built in 1997, earned a Design Award from the American Institute of Architects. The Stadium was built by General Contractor C.D. Redding Construction, of Salem, Oregon, with plans designed by Arbuckle-Costic Architects, also of Salem.
This is the second major award the Volcanoes have received in the past two years at the Baseball Winter Meetings. In 2001, the club was awarded the prestigious Freitas Award, as the best Class A Short Season franchise in the nation.
