Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Oregon - The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were overpowered on Friday night in the second game of a five-game series as they took the loss to the Spokane Indians, 13-6.
The Volcanoes scored the first run of the game when third baseman Manuel Geraldo hit an RBI-double down the right field line to bring in shortstop Ryan Howard in the bottom of the third inning.
The Indians countered to take the lead in the fifth inning when second baseman Brallan Perez scored after right fielder Seth Spivey grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Left fielder Luis Terrero then singled to bring in center fielder Leody Taveras.
The Indians continued their assault on the Volcanoes in the sixth inning as designated hitter Stephan Lohr scored on a bases-loaded walk, catcher Alex Kowalczyk crossed the plate after Taveras grounded out to second base and first baseman Todd McDonald came home on a sacrifice fly by Spivey.
However, the Volcanoes would not go down without a fight as center fielder Bryan Reynolds hit a towering solo home run shot for his fourth home run of the season.
The Indians got three more runs in the top of the seventh as Kowalczyk scored on a fielding error by Volcanoes second baseman Kevin Rivera. Brallan Perez, the next batter, hit his first home run of the season on a line drive bullet to left field.
The Volcanoes got another run in the top of the seventh when Bryan Reynolds was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, bringing first baseman Ryan Kirby home and putting the score at 8-3.
The Indians' offensive destruction continued in the top of the ninth inning as Lohr scored on a fielding error by Rivera. Kowalczyk, McDonald and Perez scored on a triple by center fielder Blain Prescott. The final run for the Indians came when third baseman Charles Leblanc hit a single to left field to bring in Prescott.
The Volcanoes made things interesting in the ninth as Rivera hit his first home run of the season on a two-run moon shot to right field. After he tripled to right field, designated hitter Heath Quinn later came in to score on a wild pitch. But that was all she wrote, as the Volcanoes would go on to lose 13-6.
Lefty Garrett Williams made his second start of the season for the Volcanoes, going up against fellow lefty pitcher Sal Mendez.
Williams pitched three solid innings, giving up no runs, allowing two hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.
Mendez got the win for the Indians after pitching six innings, giving up two runs (one earned and one unearned), three hits, along with six strikeouts and two walks.
Rayan Hernandez, Kendry Melo, Nolan Riggs, John Timmins and Matt Pope came in for relief for the Volcanoes. Hernandez picked up the loss tonight for the Volcanoes.
Game three will be tomorrow, Saturday, August 6, at 6:35 p.m. Melvin Adon will take the mound for the Volcanoes facing off against C.D. Pelham at Volcanoes Stadium. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
