Volcanoes' Ninth-Inning Rally Topples Bears

June 22, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears lost 6-4 Thursday night after a four-run ninth inning by the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes at Yakima County Stadium. The five-game series is now even at 1-1 after two games.

The Bears fell behind 1-0 in the second after a lead-off home run by Andrew Cain. That was the beginning of the end for Bears starting pitcher Miguel Pena, who left with an injury after just one and a third innings pitched.

Out of the bullpen came Victor Acosta, who stranded two base runners in the second to pick up Pena, and then allowed only one run in three and two thirds innings. While Acosta was dealing on the mound to the tune of six strikeouts, the Bears offense got out in front thanks to a run in the fourth and a two-run Josh Parr home run in the fifth to make it a 3-2 game in favor of the Bears going to the sixth inning.

Frank Santana was the second man out of the Bears bullpen and tossed three shutout innings. The Bears added to the lead with a run in the eighth when Joe Loftus hit a single to score Parr.

With a 4-2 advantage, the Bears needed just three outs in the top of the ninth inning for the win. However, Enrique Burgos struggled in the save situation and was tagged for four runs while retiring just one batter. The Bears batters were unable to rally in the bottom of the ninth and Burgos took the loss.

Offensively the Bears were led by Parr, who went 2-for-3 with the home run, a walk, three runs, and two RBIs. Kevin Medrano finished 2-for-4 with a steal and a run scored for his second-consecutive multi-hit game. Shaun Cooper extended his hit streak to six-straight games after reaching on a single in the first inning.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 7:05 at Yakima County Stadium Friday night. Left-handed pitcher Alex Carreras will start for the Bears against right-handed pitcher Raymundo Montero.
