Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
Pasco, WASHINGTON-The Salem Keizer Volcanoes took advantage of five Tri-City Dust Devil errors, as well as quality pitching from Stephen Woods and Raffi Vizcaino, to cruise to a 6-2 victory Saturday night. The win marked the first game of a five game road series at Tri-City.
The Volcanoes were off to a hot start in the first inning. With two outs, designated hitter Gio Brusa hit a double that was followed by a RBI single from right fielder Heath Quinn. Woods proceeded to shut the Dust Devils down in order in the bottom half.
Tri-City would score in the bottom of the second however, but the game wasn't tied for long. Centerfielder Woody Edwards, playing in his first game as a Volcano, led off the inning with a single. He would eventually come around to score on an RBI groundout by Brusa. Quinn followed with yet another RBI single, this one scoring leftfielder Ashford Fulmer.
Salem-Keizer would score again in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
In the fifth, Quinn would reach on a throwing error by Dust Devil shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., and Volcanoes shortstop Ryan Howard followed promptly with a RBI single to plate Quinn.
With two down in the sixth, third baseman Chase Compton reached base on catcher's interference, and would steal second moments later. Compton would head to third on a wild pitch by Tri-City pitcher Dalton Erb, which also walked Edwards. Edwards attempted to steal second in the next at bat, but a throwing error from Dust Devil catcher Wilfri De La Cruz allowed Compton to score.
The Volcanoes added another insurance run in the seventh, when Brusa hit a leadoff pop fly to left field that was misplayed by the Dust Devil's left fielder Josh Magee. Running hard, Brusa would end up at third on the play, and easily scored on a sacrifice fly by Howard.
Woods, the starter, was solid in his first outing as a Salem-Keizer Volcano. He threw five innings of two-hit baseball, striking out six. He allowed two runs; only one earned, and picked up the win.
Vizcaino was stellar in his first appearance of the season out of the bullpen. He allowed only one hit in four innings and struck out seven batters. He picked up his first save as a member of the Volcanoes.
Salem Keizer will be back in action tomorrow from Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 P.M. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
