Volcanoes Aid NWL in All-Star Game Win

August 3, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

OGDEN, Utah - Including a two-hit evening from Ashford Fulmer and a home run by Gio Brusa, the Northwest League used 19 hits to defeat the Pioneer League in the All-Star Game at Lindquist Field on Tuesday night. Salem-Keizer's Kevin Rivera and John Riley also saw action in the Mid-Summer Classic.

Before the game even got started, the Volcanoes were in the headlines as Brusa mounted a comeback to claim the Home Run Derby title.

The Giants 2016 sixth-round draft pick flashed the power in the main event as well, homering in the fourth inning to cap off a seven-run frame for the Northwest League and grant them a 10-4 lead. With two away in the inning, Brusa blasted a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall.

In the same leadoff role that he has held for many games with the Volcanoes this season, Fulmer went 2-for-5 with a drawn walk and two runs scored for the visiting Northwest League. With two outs in the top of the third, Fulmer doubled and came around to score, giving the NWL the early 3-0 edge. The outfielder's second hit of the evening -- a one-out single -- came in a wild fourth inning. Fulmer impressively flashed the speed by stealing both second and third base and coming in to score for the second time in the game.

Kevin Rivera and John Riley were both used as reserves for the Northwest League later in the game.

The NWL All-Stars scored the first three runs of the ballgame, but found themselves trailing the Pioneer League All-Stars 4-3 at the conclusion of three frames. The visitors used a seven-run fourth inning to reclaim the lead and never look back. The Northwest League finished with 11 runs on 19 hits.

Tuesday's inter-league affair marked the second year of the Northwest League vs. Pioneer League format, with the NWL winning the inaugural matchup in dramatic fashion from Avista Stadium in Spokane, Washington one year ago. It was announced amid Tuesday's festivities that, pending approval from Minor League Baseball, the Hillsboro Hops of the Northwest League will host the 2017 All-Star Game.

The Volcanoes return to action on Thursday, August 4, beginning an eight-game homestand featuring contests vs. the Spokane Indians and the Eugene Emeralds. The homestand will feature San Francisco Giants Night on Aug. 4, Cancer Awareness Weekend on Aug. 5-7 and Kids Night on Aug. 8.
