
Virginia Beach holds off Timbers, 2-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Jakob Fenger and Steve Shak each scored on assists from Darren Caskey as the Virginia Beach Mariners shut out the Portland Timbers Friday night at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
In the 33rd minute, Caskey sent a through ball to Fenger who split the defense and sent a low shot underneath Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders.
The Mariners (6-13-7, 25pts) added another goal in the second half on a corner kick when Caskey found the head of Shak in the 51st.
Next up, the Timbers (8-9-8, 32pts) head to the University of Richmond Stadium Saturday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m. (Pacific) for a match with the Richmond Kickers.
Saunders collected four saves on 15 shots in the losing effort.
The Timbers' final two regular-season matches of the year will take place at PGE Park, beginning Thursday, Sept. 8, when Portland hosts Atlanta at 7 p.m. After a day off, the Timbers will close out the regular season with a match against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, Sept. 10, also at 7 p.m.
