Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

The Whitecaps picked up a big road win in Toronto to put a possible second-place finish well within their grasp. Rookie striker Joey Gjertsen scored the only goal Vancouver needed in a well-deserved victory, in the midst of the tough three-game road trip. Several players were rested by coach Bob Lilley, including league leading scorer Jason Jordan. The win sets up a huge second-place showdown in Rochester on Sunday against the Raging Rhinos.

Goalkeeper Josh Wicks faced few serious tests, as he confidently recorded his fifth shutout in nine starts. Deputizing for the injured Mike Franks, the young rookie is currently the league's top rated keeper with a 0.44 goals against average.

The Whitecaps now at 12-5-9 move into a second-place tie with Rochester on 45 points, as both teams have two games remaining. The Whitecaps can clinch second place with a win in Rochester on Sunday, or can still clinch with a tie if the Caps also defeat Montreal in their final game of the regular season.

The Whitecaps kick off against Rochester on Sunday, September 4, at 3:05pm Pacific Time, in a game that can be heard live on TEAM 1040 radio. The Whitecaps then return home for their final game of the regular season, on Sunday, September 11 in a rematch against the league-leading Montreal Impact, in a 4:00pm start at Swangard.
