Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Roanoke Valley Vipers faced each of their United Hockey League Eastern Division opponents once this past week, and they settled for a 1-2-1 record from those games, losing twice by deficits of six or more goals, but going into shootouts in each of the other two games, coming up successful in one. Roanoke Valley is now 14-29-6 with 34 standings points at 5th place in the Eastern Division.

Tuesday, February 14th at Elmira

Elmira Jackals 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 3, SO

The Vipers got on the scoreboard first against the Jackals on Tuesday night with a goal from now-departed right wing L.P. Martin. (Martin was traded to the Flint Generals Wednesday for former NHL winger Matt Elich). Elmira answered with two goals before Mike Wiggins would tie it back up for the Vipers. Eddy Lowe would give the Jackals the advantage at 17:40 of the third period, but David Beauregard and the Vipers answered right back with a goal at 19:35 to force a shootout. Beauregard would score in the shootout for the Vipers, but Craig MacDonald and Sam Paolini would double the Vipers total in the extra rounds to win it for the Jackals.

Wednesday February 15th vs. Richmond

Richmond RiverDogs 8, Roanoke Valley Vipers 1

After falling behind to the RiverDogs by a goal in the first period, Mike Wiggins would get the Vipers on the board as he scored in the second straight game of his new point-scoring streak. Richmond answered with seven straight, however, one more coming before the end of the first period, and three coming in each of the following periods. The Vipers showed some signs of life, however, as Mike Krelove, Kevin McLaughlin, Charlie Elezi, and Mark Scott all dropped the gloves with their cross-state rivals.

Saturday, February 18th vs. Danbury

Roanoke Valley Vipers 6, Danbury Trashers 5, SO

David Beauregard and Mike Wiggins scored consecutively in the first period to get the Vipers off to an early lead. The Trashers answered with four straight, however, giving themselves a two-goal advantage on their hosts. Erick Lajoie took care of erasing the deficit though, scoring back-to-back goals at 10:37 and 12:42 of the third period to get the Vipers back in the game. New Viper, Matt Elich, who was acquired from Flint in a trade for L.P. Martin earlier in the week scored 30 seconds later, giving the Vipers a 5-4 lead. Another 10 seconds would go by before Mike Omicioli would tie the game for Danbury to force a shootout. Both netminders were near-perfect in the shootout, but David Beauregard managed to supplement his four regulation points (1G, 3A) by beating Jayme Platt to win the shootout for the Vipers.

Sunday, February 19th vs. Adirondack

Adirondack Frostbite 9, Roanoke Valley Vipers 3

The Frostbite jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead Sunday afternoon against the Vipers, and never looked back, scoring nine before the end of the game, and allowing only three to the Vipers. Jonathan Charette, Charlie Elezi, and David Beauregard each scored for the Vipers. Elezi's goal was his first of the season and first in a Vipers uniform.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers head to Glens Falls, New York this week to take on the Adirondack Frostbite in the second and third games of their three-game home and home series against their Eastern Division rival. Adirondack will host the Vipers on Wednesday and Friday before they head back to Virginia for a Saturday night game in Richmond.
