
Vipers Take Down Victoria Seals By One Run

The Calgary Vipers surrendered three runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to a 6-5 defeat at the hands of the Victoria Seals at NorBrock Stadium in Kamloops, British Columbia. After falling behind 3-0 the Vipers scored five unanswered to take a 5-3 lead only to have the Seals score the final three runs of the game for the victory. With the loss the two teams spilt the mini two-game exhibition series.
Matt Edgecombe led the way for the Snakes offensively going two-for-four with two runs batted in.
On the mound Joe Sergent started and threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, Daniel Buller tossed two-thirds of an inning hitless, Berek Fasking pitched a scoreless frame, and Rene Miniel threw an inning and two-thirds hitless while striking out three.
Victoria opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning as Terrence McClain walked and Matt Kavanaugh plated a run with a double for a 1-0 lead.
The Seals added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning as Devon Franklin walked, Wilver Perez singled, Colin Moro walked, and both Franklin and Perez scored on wild pitches for a 3-0 score.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 3-3 as Luis Taveras tripled, Matt Edgecombe knocked in a run and reached on a fielder's choice, Chad Rothford singled, Kevin Price walked to load the bases, and both Jonny Kaplan and Julio Ramirez walked to score the tying runs.
The Vipers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Caonabo Cosme reached on a dropped third strike, Drew Miller walked, Edgecombe plated his second run of the game with a single, Rothford walked, and Colin Ziegel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 5-3.
Victoria jumped back out in front in the eighth inning as Shane Cronin homered, Lyndon Estill doubled, Scott Wallis walked, Charlie Strandlund doubled in the tying run, and Wallis scored on a wild pitch for the 6-5 lead.
On May 15th the Vipers are hosting a Meet & Greet and serving up a BBQ Burger Cook-off at the Main Dish in Calgary at 12:00. The Vipers open up the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on May 19th with a seven game road-trip through Yuma and Tucson, Arizona.
Opening Day is scheduled for May 27th at Foothills Stadium with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.
