HIDALGO, Texas, March 12, 2015-The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (22-18) topped the Reno Bighorns (16-26) 138-123 tonight at State Farm Arena.
Jarvis Threatt led the Vipers with 32 points and 14 assists. Jaron Johnson followed with 26 points. Raphiael Putney scored 17 of his 21 total points in the first quarter. Glen Rice, Jr. added 20 points, and Houston Rockets assignee Clint Capela scored 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Ra'shad James led the Bighorns with 34 points. David Stocked contributed 28 points. Sim Bhullar scored 15 points, followed by Austin Witter with 13 points.
The Vipers outscored Reno 38-26 in the first quarter of the game. With 1:14 on the clock in the first quarter, Putney connected on a three-point shot to give RGV its largest lead of the first half 38-24.
Reno opened the second quarter with a 20-2 run to take a 46-40 lead with 8:13 remaining in the half. The Vipers fought back and tied the game at 61 points with 3:39 left in that half, courtesy of a free throw from Travis Bader. At halftime, RGV led 67-64.
A minute into the third quarter, James made a three-pointer to tie the game at 69 points. However, it was not enough to stop the Vipers. Jaron Johnson responded with a three-point shot to put RGV back in control 72-69. The Vipers took their largest lead, 137-115 with 3:15 remaining in the game.
Next up, the Vipers host the Santa Cruz Warriors Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena. Fans can bring four non-perishable food items to the box office to receive one free ticket to the game. Donations will be made locally to the Salvation Army.
