Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers announce today that they have re-acquired infielder Caonabo Cosme from the Victoria Seals of the Golden Baseball League in exchange for outfielder Colin Moro. Cosme joined the Vipers last year but did not participate in the post-season due to a season-ending injury. In the offseason Caonabo was dealt to Victoria to complete the "future considerations" in an August 2009 trade that saw Calgary acquire 2009 G.B.L. Championship Series Most Valuable Player Sergio Pedroza and All-Star pitcher Isaac Hess.
Last year Cosme finished with the second highest batting average in the G.B.L. at .387. In 33 games he also connected on seven home runs, knocked in and scored 28 runs, and posted a .430 on-base percentage. Earlier this year the La Vega, Dominian Republic native played in the Mexican AAA league with Nuevo Laredo.
The right hander hitter and thrower has 13 years experience under his belt playing almost entirely in affiliated baseball with the Athletics, Cardinals, Yankees, Reds, and Tigers organizations. In his career the 31-year-old, 6'2", 205 lbs. infielder has played 206 games at the "AAA" level, another 331 at "AA" and 1175 games overall. In 2008 Caonabo was in the Detroit system at both the "AAA" and "AA" levels.
The Calgary Vipers open training camp on May 8th with workouts at Foothills Stadium. From May 11th - 13th the Vipers travel to Kamloops, British Columbia to host a baseball clinic followed by two preseason games with the Victoria Seals. On May 15th the team is hosting a Meet & Greet and serving up a BBQ Burger Cook-off at the Main Dish in Calgary. The Vipers open up the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on May 19th with a seven game road-trip through Yuma and Tucson, Arizona.
Opening Day is scheduled for May 27th at Foothills Stadium with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams to the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones. This season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.
Tickets are currently on sale at the Vipers' office (2255 Crowchild Trail NW), you can also call 403-277-2255 or visit the Calgary Vipers' brand new website: www.calgaryvipers.com .
