Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals will be hosting their second annual Open Tryout Saturday May 1st down at the ballpark. Local baseball prospects will be able to showcase their talent for the Capitals coaching staff with the hopes of securing an invite to main training camp May 5th in Tucson, Arizona.

Caps Field Manager Brent Bowers along with Hitting Coach Gord Gerlach and Pitching Coach Mark Randall will all be on hand to evaluate the talent. The hopefuls will be put through a series of drills and tests to see if they've got what it takes to play professional baseball for the second year Golden Baseball League franchise.

"An open tryout like this attracts ball players of all shapes, sizes and abilities," stated Caps Manager Brent Bowers. "We take this very seriously. They'll have to show that they have enough skill and talent and drive to take away a roster spot from the 29 professionals that we've already invited to our main camp. We'll have a look and they'll have a legitimate shot at making our club, just look at last year."

Bowers is referring to shortstop Aaron Hornostaj who was a walk-on at the Open Tryout last year and made the team. The Woodstock, Ontario native had previous experience at the AAA level with the San Francisco Giants organization and earned a regular spot in the Caps lineup in 2009.

The Capitals will host a similar tryout the following day on Sunday May 2, in Tucson. Pitchers and catchers will report to training camp on May 5th and the remaining position players will arrive in the desert on May 7th. Edmonton's regular season will begin with a 10 game road trip starting May 19th in Tucson. The Caps home opener is set for Tuesday June 1st against the Na Koa Ikaika - 'Warriors' from Maui.
