Vipers Hit 21 Threes in Win Over Bakersfield

HIDALGO, Texas- Stanley Asumnu and Lee Humphrey each scored a game high 28 points and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers netted 21 three-point field goals on Thursday in a 127-104 victory over the Bakersfield Jam at State Farm Arena. It is the the second win for the Vipers (7-5) over the Jam (6-4) this season.

Rio Grande Valley started the game with plenty of energy as they exploded on a 16-2 run to take a 29-13 lead with 2:55 remaining in the opening period. The Vipers outscored the Jam 33-20 after one.

The Vipers were able to increase their lead in the second quarter, but not without an early run from the Jam. Bakersfield closed the Vipers lead to seven points at 44-37 with Mustapha Farrakhan netted a three-pointer with 7:17 remaining in the half. The Jam were within 10 with 2:29 to play in the half after a Jeremy Wise jumper at 60-50. The Vipers then responded with a 9-0 run to close out the half, including two three-pointers from Josh Tarver to lead 69-50 at the intermission.

The Vipers seemingly had the game in control in the third as they led 84-67 with 6:36 to play in the period. The Jam responded with a 16-6 run to pull within seven at 90-83 on a Osiris Eldridge dunk with 53 seconds to play in the third. Humphrey then drained a three for the Vipers on the ensuing Viper possession to give RGV the 93-83 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Vipers would outscore the Jam 34-21 in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. They led by as many as 26 points in the final period before rounding out the 23 point victory.

Asumnu, the reigning D-League Performer of the Week, added seven rebounds, but saw his four game double-double streak come to an end. Asumnu's 28 tied a career high. Humphrey scored in double figures for the seventh straight game. The 28 points set a new career high while setting a career best in three-point field goals with eight. Julian Sensley added 17 points with nine boards and five assists. Kelvin Lewis pitched in with 14 points seven boards and five assists.

Farrakhan netted four of his seven three-point attempts to finish with a team high 23 points in the loss. Eldridge chipped in with 13 points and four assists. David Palmer scored 14 and finished with a team high nine boards. Renaldo Major scored 11 in his return to the Jam.

The Vipers and Jam will meet again at State Farm Arena on Friday night. Tip-off for the second half of the weekend series begins at 7:00 PM.
