Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers committed three errors and gave up 15 hits in losing 14-11 to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The Cracker-Cats did most of their scoring with two five run frames in the fourth and sixth. Twice Calgary battled back to within one run but both times Edmonton responded right away to increase their lead in the bottom of the inning. The loss drops the Snakes to 21-12 and with 11 games left in the first half their lead shrinks to 3.5 games over the Cracker-Cats.

In the top of the second inning Calgary got the scoring started with singles from Felix Jose and Nelson Castro followed by a Patrick Arlis two run double for the 2-0 lead.

Edmonton tied the game in the bottom of the third inning starting with a leadoff double by John Pasieka and he scored on a Marcus Nettles RBI single. Ruddy Yan followed with a double and Joe Jiannetti plated a run with a run batted in groundout.

The Cracker-Cats took the lead an inning later with a five spot for the 7-2 lead. Orlando Miller was hit by a pitch and Carlos Arroyo singled to put two runners on base. With Kevin House missing a bunt attempt catcher Patrick Arlis threw behind the runner Miller at second base. Miller took off for third and shortstop Nelson Castro's throw got away and allowed him to score. Following a Pasieka walk, Jonathan Castro and Nettles both picked up RBI base knocks. With the bases loaded after an intentional walk to Jiannetti, Chris Van Rossum knocked in the final two runs of the frame with a single.

Calgary responded right back in the top of the fifth inning with a Darryl Brinkley single and walks to both Travis Drader and Jorge Mejia to load the bases. Brinkley scored on a wild pitch and Felix Jose knocked in two runs with his 400th double of his career for the 7-5 score.

It became a one run ballgame an inning later with a double from Brinkley and a Mejia RBI base hit.

Another five run inning was put on the scoreboard by Edmonton in the bottom of the sixth. Nettles walked, Yan singled, and Jiannetti drove in a run with a double. Miller cashed a run with a single and Arroyo scored two more with his triple. Finally Kevin House hit a sacrifice fly for the 12-6 advantage.

In the top of the seventh inning the Snakes got back into the game with a Castro single and Jose Morban crushing his tenth long ball of the season. Arlis and Colin Moro followed with back-to-back doubles for the 12-9 score.

For the second time the Vipers came within one run in the top of the eighth inning. Castro walked, Morban singled, Arlis reached on a fielder's choice, and Moro plated two runs with a triple for the 12-11 score.

Insurance runs were added in the bottom of the inning with a walk to Arroyo and House laying down a bunt which was fielded by pitcher Sean Kramer and thrown into centerfield for an error. Brinkley then committed a fielding error and Arroyo scored. Nettles hit a sacrifice fly to score House for the 14-11 final.

Calgary starter Jordy Alexander (3-3) took the loss lasting 3.2 innings and giving up four earned runs.

Mejia and Brinkley extended their on base streaks to 33 and 23 games respectively.

Calgary now returns home to Foothills Stadium Wednesday July 2nd at 6:05 PM (MDT) for a double-header against the Cracker-Cats. Ryan Schurman (1-1) will start Game 1 and Dallas Mahan (3-1) toes the rubber for the back half of the twin bill.
