Yuma Scorpions News Release
The Yuma Scorpions bats erupt early and often to get a large enough lead that even a ten run inning out of the St. George Roadrunners wasn't enough for the win.
The St. George Roadrunners bats stayed quiet almost the entire game against Roger Luque, who got his second win on the season. The only blemish against Luque in the game was a solo homerun given up to Ryan Stevenson to start off the third inning. The rest of the way for him was pretty good. Roger's final line is 6 innings, 4 hits, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts, and 1 run.
Roadrunner starter, and former Yuma Scorpion, Aaron Wilson, was not as fortunate as Roger Luque. Wilson would get hammered four straight innings to give the Scorpions the lead they would need to hold off the Roadrunners rally.
Like Roger Luque, he was able to hold the Scorpions scoreless in the first two, before giving up 2 in the third. Only one of the runs scored in the third would be earned. Darrick Hale, who is off to an impressive professional start, would reach. The Rich Janeway would reach on an error before Calderon could get a single to score Hale. Janeway would be brought home on a Jova sacrifice fly.
The Scorpions were not done banging up Wilson for the third time on the year. In the fourth inning, the Scorpions would score 3, this time all earned. 5 of the first 6 batters that Wilson would face reached base safely. Jose Rodriguez, Hector Bernal, and Darrick Hale would all come around to score on the inning.
The offense quieted down a little in the fifth, only scoring a single run thanks to Hector Bernal's, second straight double. Pete Farina would get the RBI to plate Bernal with a single of his own.
However, the Scorpions offense would erupt in the 6th to get an almost insurmountable lead. The Scorpions would score six times in the innings, all before a single out would be recorded. A single and double to start the inning spelled signs of trouble before a walk and another single really started to hurt. Wilson would give up another double to Jeremy Cleveland before he would be pulled for Howerton. The first batter Howerton would face would get a double and come around to score later. A total of 11 batters would come up in the sixth for the Scorpions.
The Scorpions would score another two in the seventh, this time thanks to two walks given up by Shannon Sprouse. Pete Farina would record his third and fourth RBI of the night.
However, in the eighth, the Roadrunners offense would erupt. The Roadrunners would send thirteen batters to the plate in the inning and rough up James Kuzniak. Kuzniak would allow nine runs, and the first eight batters to reach safely and come around to score. Felipe Lira would come in to face one batter and walk him. Neil Hayes would come in and salvage the inning for the Scorpions giving up a Wiki Gonzalez homerun, his second of the inning, before recording the final two outs.
The Scorpions would score one in the bottom of the eighth, and Jean Carlos Guillen would shut down the Roadrunners in the ninth to salvage the win. Final score, Scorpions 15 Roadrunners 11.
The Scorpions will be playing a game in El Centro, CA tonight before returning to Desert Sun Stadium on Wednesday. Wednesday will be bald night, and in honor of that, all those lacking hair will enter the stadium free of charge.
