
Vipers Fall to Tulsa 144-127

HIDALGO, Texas, January 27, 2014 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (19-7) fell 144-127 to the Tulsa 66ers (9-16) tonight at State Farm Arena.
Akeem Ellis led the Vipers with 27 points, and shot 7-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc. Troy Daniels added 26 points. Tom Ohlbrecht added a double-double 21 points and 12 rebounds, and B.J. Young added 18 points.
Mario Little led the 66ers with a double-double 27 points and 10 rebounds. Rodney Bartholomew also scored 27 points, followed by Mustafa Shakur with 23 points. Andre Roberson added a double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Reggie Williams also scored 20 points.
Bartholomew sank the first basket of the game with a jump shot for the 66ers. Daniels responded with a three-pointer to put the Vipers ahead 3-2. Shakur followed with a shot from behind the arc for Tulsa, and Isaiah Canaan tied the game at 5 points with two free throws. The score tied four times during the fourth quarter. A layup and a free throw from Bishop helped the Vipers take a 18-17 lead midway through the first. Shakur answered a jump shot to give Tulsa a 19-18 advantage. Tulsa held the lead throughout the remainder of the game. At halftime, the Vipers trailed 72-63.
Bishop started the second half with a layup for the Vipers, and Daniels connected on a shot from behind the arc to cut RGV's deficit to 73-68 midway through the fourth quarter, Young made a layup and a shot at the line to help the Vipers get within 120-112, but RGV was not able to close the gap. Tulsa won 144-127.
The Vipers will host the Tulsa 66ers again Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena. Then, RGV will hit the road for back-to-back games at Texas Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
