Vipers End T-Birds Winning Streak

Hidalgo, TX - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (7-5) raced out to an early lead against the New Mexico Thunderbirds (7-5) on Monday night and won by a score of 116-87.

Keyed by Garrett Temple the Vipers opened up an early 29-11 lead after a 22-6 run in the first quarter. Temple led all scorers with the 10 points in the first quarter and the Vipers led the Thunderbirds 29-13.

In the second quarter, the Vipers extended their lead to 21 points on a Terrell Harris three-pointer with 8:28 to go. Led by Dar Tucker, who scored five points on a 7-0 run, the T-Birds cut the lead to 11 at 45-34. Mustafa Shakur scored nine points over the final four minutes of the half to help push the Vipers lead to 60-43.

The Vipers outscored the T-Birds 32-19 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 92-62 heading into the fourth. The Vipers went on a quick 6-0 run to start the second half and never led by less than 18 in the quarter. Richard Roby hit a layup with 4.1 seconds left in the quarter to extend the lead to a game-high 30 points.

In the fourth quarter, the Vipers built the lead up to as many as 35 points. The Thunderbirds scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to make their game total a season low 87 points. In three games against the Vipers this season, the Thunderbirds have managed to score just 88.7 points per game.

The Vipers shot used a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double digits, but no one over 19 points.

The Thunderbirds next game is at the Bakersfield Jam on Tuesday, Dec. 28. They will then wrap up the month on Dec. 31 with "Hoopin' and Hollerin' New Years Eve", featuring a special performance by actor and comedian, Steven Michael Quezada.
