July 8, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

In a back and forth game the Calgary Vipers out slugged the St. George RoadRunners 12-11 at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. In a game that featured four lead changes and four separate ties it was a three run eighth inning from the Vipers that was the difference. Sean Kramer (2-1) pitched excellent out of the Snakes bullpen in going two and a third innings and allowing only one hit while striking out five to pick up the victory. Calgary's record again moves ten games over .500 at 26-16 with just two games remaining in the first half of the Golden Baseball League season.

St. George scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning with a Liu Rodriguez single, Seth Loman being hit by a pitch, and a Kory Wayment run batted in base hit.

Right back came the Snakes in the next half inning on a Colin Moro single, Darryl Brinkley walk, and three straight RBI bases knocks from Jorge Mejia, Travis Drader, and Carlos Duncan to put Calgary ahead 3-1.

The RoadRunners grabbed a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Wiki Gonzalez singled, moved to second base on a Juan Serrano sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Seth Loman RBI base hit.

Calgary got that run back in the next half inning with a Brinkley double and a Mejia RBI single for the 4-2 advantage.

Six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning gave St. George their second lead of the game. Three straight doubles by Ryan Stevenson, Greg Lemon, and Claudio Arias started the scoring with two runs. Following a Gonzalez infield single and Serrano walk, Rodriguez delivered a sacrifice fly out. Loman capped the inning with a three run shot for the 8-4 lead.

Again the Vipers responded right away in the next half inning with Drew Miller being hit by pitch, Jorge Tang singling, and Moro plating a run with a single. Brinkley tied the game at eight with a three run blast and his sixth homerun of the season.

In the top of the seventh inning Calgary took their second lead of the game on a Nelson Castro double, Kevin Price sacrifice bunt to move Castro to second base, and a Miller RBI single.

The scoring continued in the Snakes' next at-bat with three straight walks to Drader, Castro, and Price to load the bases. Miller picked up a RBI with another hit by pitch, and Tang cashed two runs with a base hit for the 12-8 score.

In the bottom of the inning St. George made it a one run game when Dustin Hicks reached on an error by second baseman Mejia, Stevenson singled, Lemon knocked in a run with a base hit, Arias cashed another tally on a fielder's choice, Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice, and Cody Nowlin picked up an RBI base hit to cut the score down to 12-11.

This series wraps up with another twin-bill Wednesday July 9th at 4:05 PM (MDT) with Jordy Alexander (3-3) and Evan Greusel (6-1) toeing the rubber. After a day off the road trip concludes and the second half of the season begins against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats Friday July 11th, Saturday July 12th, and Sunday July 13th.

On Tuesday July 15th Snakes' Manager Mike Busch will lead the 20-man Golden Baseball League All-Star squad as they take on the United League's All-Stars in a battle of two of the top independent leagues in San Angelo, Texas. Joining Busch from the Vipers will be ace and pitching coach Evan Greusel, designated hitter Felix Jose, and outfielders Darryl Brinkley and Drew Miller.

The Snakes return home to Foothills Stadium Friday July 18th at 7:05 PM (MDT) for "Paint the Park Pink" weekend. Friday's game will open a six day home stand which will feature seven games against the Chico Outlaws and the Yuma Scorpions.
