Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Outlaws are still "oh-fer" for the season against the Golden Baseball League's South Division-leading Orange County Flyers - the Flyers beat Chico for the seventh straight time, using a six run 4th inning and a three run 9th to spoil Scott Navarro's first pitching appearance in five years and post a 10-4 victory over the Outlaws Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Nettleton Stadium.
Navarro - the former Chico Heat star who has not pitched professionally since retiring in 2003 - looked good through the first two innings, allowing just one hit in matching zeroes with Orange County starter Jesse Smith. But several Flyers hits and some shoddy fielding behind Navarro in the 3rd led to the first of two big innings for Orange County - back-to-back doubles by Josh Arhart and Gabe Mayorga put the Flyers on the board...then Mayorga scored when Jesse Kovacs misfired trying to throw Mark Okano out at first base. Two batters later Jermy Acey reached on an error by Outlaws shortstop Eric Pringle...Pat Breen followed with a single to right to drive in Okano. Jeff LaRue then belted a three-run homer to left to cap the rally to put Orange County up 6-0. Chico sliced the lead in half in the 4th when Jose Valdez doubled and scored on a throwing error by Flyers first baseman Fernando Pacheco...three batters later Todd Gossage sliced a double to left to plate Shane Cronin and Lino Garcia to make the score 6-3.
Orange County plated a run in the 6th when Jeff Van Houten singled, advanced to third on a double by Pacheco and scored on a Mayorga sacrifice fly...but Chico answered in their half of the 6th when Garcia doubled home Valdez to make it 7-4. That was as close as the Outlaws would get, though, as they could only muster one more hit the rest of the way. The Flyers put the game away in the 9th when Breen blasted a bases-loaded doubled off Chico reliever Rob Ellis to put Orange County up 10-4. Dane De La Rosa came out of the Flyers bullpen to lock down the victory, retiring Chico in order in the 9th and finishing with a flourish by striking out Pringle and Bryan Silverman.
Smith (2-0) went six innings, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run in picking up the victory...though Navarro (0-1) took the loss, only two of his runs were earned in two-and-two-thirds innings. Garcia had three of the Outlaws seven hits on the night...Breen went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs to pace the Flyers, who with Monday's win improved to 25-12 on the season...Chico slipped to 13-26 on the year. Game two of the series is set for Tuesday, with right-hander Greg Bicknell (2-2) on the mound for the Outlaws...righty Jeremy Zick (3-3) will go for Orange County. First pitch is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
