Armada win a thriller

It was an exciting game from start to finish here at Blair Field. The Fleet came back to score five runs in the third after giving up four to Edmonton in the same inning. The Cats would score three more to go up by two until the eighth and ninth when the Armada scored three to win the game 8-7.

Sixteen hits were recorded for Long Beach. Three of them by recently acquired 1B Brett Flowers who went 3 for 5 with a run scored. 2B/SS Cleatus Davidson sac flied a run in the eighth. Norm Hutchins pinch hit a double off the left field wall and LF Dan "Double" Trumble true to his nickname doubled in Norm to tie the ball game. 2B Julian Williams who pinch ran in the eighth, came to bat in the ninth with two runners on and drove a ball over 2B Ruddy Yan's head into right to score the winning run--DH Tony Torcato.

Armada starter Nick Bierbrodt went 6 innings giving up 7 runs on 6 hits while walking 6 and striking out 5. Closer Nick Cavanaugh (1-0) got his first win after shutting down Edmonton in the ninth striking out 2. Edmonton starter Ricardo Rodriguez went 7 innings giving up 5 runs, 3 earned on 11 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Reliever Joel Schmal (0-5) got the loss as the winning run was charged to him and the hit given up by reliever Robert Coello in the ninth.

All-Star Joe Jiannetti went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's on two doubles. Yan scored three runs. 3B Orlando Miller and RF Carlos Arroyo each had 2 RBI's apiece. Probable starters tomorrow for Long Beach Ryan Claypool (3-4) and for Edmonton Nick Peterson (1-2). Game time is 7:05PM Pacific.
