June 4, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers took full advantage of some sloppy JackHammers defense and picked up their fourth straight win with a 9-7 victory Sunday afternoon at Foothills Stadium.
Calgary had eleven hits in the contest to go along with five Joliet errors to help sweep the series and improve to 7-9 on the year. Right-hander Clint Hosford (2-2) earned his second win of the season, working six complete innings, allowing four runs on ten hits while striking out four, he didn't walk a batter.
Joliet starter Todd Ozias (0-3) is still looking for his first win after giving up seven runs in just over four innings to take the loss.
The JackHammers struck first in their half of the first inning. Back-to-back doubles off Hosford by John Lackaff and Chad Ehrnsberger put the visitors up 1-0 early.
Calgary responded quickly by scoring five times in the bottom of the second to go ahead in the game. The Vipers batted around and picked up four hits off Ozias, the JackHammers also committed two errors to help the cause. Sam Rosario, Nelson Castro and Josh Carter all drove in runs with RBI singles in the inning.
Joliet got right back in it in the top of the third when they managed to pick up three runs off Hosford on five hits. Lackaff and Ehrnsberger again did most of the damage, each picking up a single and scoring in the inning. Bubba Smith also scored on a Dennis Blackmon RBI double to close the gap to 5-4.
The Vipers then added one run in each of the next four innings. Rosario hit a triple in the fourth off Ozias and scored on a sacrifice fly by third-baseman Castro for the sixth Viper run of the game. Aaron McEachran then doubled off Ozias in the fifth and came around to score on a Drew Miller single to make it 7-4.
Manabu Kuramochi reached base on an error for the third time in the game in the sixth inning and scored on a Carter double to give the Vipers a four-run cushion. Joliet added one in the top of the seventh to make it 8-5 before a Yosvany Almario double in the bottom of the inning plated Adam Shorsher to put Calgary up 9-5.
Kyle Nichols hit his fourth homerun of the year off Kobayashi in the eighth to bring Joliet within two and Gill Blake scored in the top of the ninth to make it 9-7 but Jon Huizinga was able to hold the JackHammers in check the rest of the way, picking up his first save on the year.
Calgary will look to extend their winning streak to five games when the Winnipeg Goldeyes open a series in Calgary on Monday night. Quintin Oldenburg (1-2) is expected to get the start; game time is 7:05 PM.
