Schaumburg Flyers News Release

The Schaumburg Flyers dropped the third game of the season to the visiting Gary Southshore Railcats today at Alexian Field, 6-4. The Flyers took the early lead but were unable to hang on to it to finish the game. Gary improves to 5-12 on the season, while the Flyers move to 12-5. To date, three of the Flyers four losses on the season have been to Gary.

The Railcats got on the board in the first when, pinch runner Mike Coles scored on a sac hit by right fielder Andy Rohleder. The Flyers were able to halt the Railcats offense, getting out of the inning without too much damage.

The Flyers tied things up in the bottom of the third when Geoff McCallum singled to bring in Nelson Gord who had reached on a hit by pitch, then stole second. Third baseman Jarrod Patterson doubled to bring in McCallum and Rob Watson, to take the 3-1 lead. Patterson scored when designated hitter Chris Weekly singled the next at bat. The Flyers finished the inning on top 4-1.

Railcats left fielder Mike Coles homered to lead off the sixth, shrinking the Flyers lead to only two runs. The very next batter first baseman Steve Haake stepped in and cranked a homer over the right field fence. The back to back homers cut the Flyers lead to only one run, 4-3.

Derrick Ellison came in to finish the inning for Flyers starter Raymond Jenkins, keeping the lead, but not without some damage.

Railcats catcher Chris Curry tied things up at 4-4 in the seventh when he doubled to lead off the inning, and then scored on an Eric McNamee single hit to the outfield. McNamee took the 5-4 lead when he crossed the plate off of a Haake base hit. Haake was then brought in when Jermaine Allensworth doubled to centerfield, taking the two run, 6-4, lead.

The Flyers were threatening in the bottom of the ninth with two men on, but first baseman Josue Lopez got caught in a fielder's choice and then Geoff McCallum hit into a double play, ending the game with Gary on top 6-4.

Reliever Derrick Ellison picks up the loss on the day for the Flyers. Willie Glenn threw seven and two thirds for the Railcats on his way to the win, with Ryan Miller coming in for the save.
