Joliet loses on Sunday afternoon

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA-The Joliet JackHammers jumped out to an early lead for the third straight game but could not hold onto the lead as the JackHammers lost 9-7 to the Calgary Vipers on Sunday afternoon at Foothills Stadium. The JackHammers lost their sixth straight game.

Joliet scored a run in the first inning. With one out, John Lackaff doubled off of the Vipers starter Clint Hosford. Chad Ehrnsberger followed with a double to bring home Lackaff and make the score 1-0.

The JackHammers surrendered five runs in the second inning to the Calgary Vipers. The Vipers sent nine men to the plate against Todd Ozias. With one out, Drew Miller walked. He went to second on a single by Adam Shorsher. Both Miller and Shorsher advanced when the ball was misplayed by Joliet left fielder Kyle Nichols. Shorsher scored on the error by give Calgary a 2-1 lead.

Sam Rosario followed with a single and went to second on a single by Nelson Castro. Manaubu Kuramochi hit a ground ball that was misplayed by the JackHammers shortstop Blake Gill. Rosario and Castro scored to make it 4-1 Calgary. Kuramochi scored on a single by Josh Carter to make it 5-1.

Joliet pushed three runs across home plate in the third inning. Lackaff singled and was followed by a single from Ehrnsberger. With Jayson Drobiak at-bat, Lackaff and Ehrnsberger each moved up a base on a past ball. Drobiak followed with an RBI to score Ehrnsberger and make the score 5-2.

Bubba Smith then hit an RBI single to score Chad Ehrnsberger. Smith came around to score on a RBI single by Dennis Blackmon, Jr. The JackHammers found themselves within one run at 5-4.

The Vipers scored single runs in inning four through eight to quickly build back their lead. The JackHammers responded with single runs in the seventh through ninth innings. Mike Goss singled and scored on a double by Chad Erhnsberger. The JackHammers got within three runs at 8-5 on the RBI.

In the eighth inning, Kyle Nichols hit his fourth home run of the year when he launched a solo shot over the left-field wall. The ninth inning saw Joliet score a run when Blake Gill led off the inning with a single. He went to third base when Goss hit a double. Runners were on at second and third with nobody out for John Lackaff, who lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Goss. The sac fly rounded out the scoring at 9-7.

Ozias suffered the loss for the JackHammers. He pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs, four earned, and seven hits. The JackHammers committed five errors in the game to push their error total to 12 for the three-game series. Chad Ehrnsberger who went 3-5 with two RBI's, led Joliet offensively.

The JackHammers drop to 4-11 with the loss. The team continues its 11-game road trip in Gary Monday night. First pitch is at 7:00 and coverage begins with the JackHammers pregame show at 6:45 on 1340 WJOL.
