
Vipers Defeat Toros 115-105

HIDALGO, TEXAS - Marcus Morris led the Vipers with 22 points to defeat the Austin Toros 115-105 Friday night at the State Farm Arena.
Tyren Johnson put up the first basket of the game with a jump shot for the Toros, but Morris got the offense going for the Vipers with a jump shot, followed by a pair of free throws and a 3-point shot to help the Vipers take a hold of a 10-6 lead. Throughout the first quarter, the Vipers built their lead to 8 points 25-17 with two minutes left. However, the Toros were able to get within one point of the Vipers 27-26 at the end of the first quarter.
Stefan Welsh gave the Toros a 28-27 lead to start the second quarter. Johnson answered for the Vipers with a layup, but the Toros' Julian Sensley immediately came back with a 3-point shot. Marshall Brown helped the Vipers take the 34-31 lead on a shot from behind the arc that was assisted by Lee Humphrey. The Vipers built their lead to three points, 44-41 with 6:03 remaining in the quarter, but the Toros fought for control. The score tied at 51 points at the 2:31 mark before the Toros closed out the first half with the 60-55 lead.
To begin the third quarter, the Toros' Da'Sean Butler started an offensive run with a 3-point shot. It was followed by a layup from Lyons that gave the Toros their largest lead of the game by 8 points, 65-57. The Toros maintained their lead throughout most of the third quarter until a 28' shot from behind the arc by Willie Warren tied the game at 83 points with 0:27.4 remaining on the clock. Sensley put up another layup for the Toros, however Stanly Asumnu knocked down two shots from the line to tie the game at 85 points at the end of the third quarter.
Two free throws by Warren put the Vipers up 87-85 and the team never looked back. A shot from downtown from Kelvin Lewis gave the Vipers their largest lead of the game by 14 points, 109-95 with 3:23 remaining in the game. The Toros cut their deficit to 8 points, 111-103 with 1:52 left on the clock, but they could not close the gap. The Vipers took the game115-105.
The Vipers had six players record double scoring. Morris led the team with 22 points, followed by Warren with 19 points and Greg Smith with 15 points. Lewis chipped in 13 points and Will Conroy tallied 11 points and 13 assists. Marshall Brown also scored 11 points for the Vipers.
Lyons led the Toros with a double-double, 29 points and 16 rebounds, followed by Butler with 19 points. Justin Dentmon recorded 16 points and Sensley scored 11 points.
The Vipers will host the Toros once again Saturday night at State Farm Arena at 7 p.m.
