Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA Development League Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that have acquired guard/forward Sean Barnette (6-5, 220, Wingate), who opened the season with the league-leading Iowa Energy.
In 25 games (one start), Barnette is averaging 7.0 points and 2.6 rebounds pre game while shooting 43.4% from the field, 33.3% from behind the arc and 84.4% from the free throw line. Barnette, who last played on January 29, had his best stretch of the season during a four game span from January 9-to-14, with the first two of those four games coming against the Vipers. Barnette averaged 18.0 points and 2.8 rebounds, including a season-best 23 points in 36 minutes at Dakota on January 14.
"Sean fits our style well. He's a hard playing, versatile wing that can stretch the floor with his three-point shooting ability. He comes highly recommended from [Energy head coach] Nick Nurse at Iowa and we like the fact he has been on and around a winning environment," Vipers head coach Chris Finch said.
During a four-year career at Wingate, Barnette averaged 19.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 49.2% from the field, 36.7% from behind the arc and 72.6% from the free throw line. He was named All South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and a 1st team All-American in 2008. Barnette graduated as the leading scorer in South Atlantic Conference history with 2,324 points. He led Wingate in scoring in 74 of 121 games during his career.
