Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
HALIFAX, NS - Sea Dogs defenceman William Villeneuve had four assists on Thursday night in a 6-5 loss to the Halifax Mooseheads. Saint John drops to 3-5-0-0 while Halifax improves to 4-4-0-0.
Zachary Bouthillier got the start in net for Saint John while Halifax started Cole McLaren who has been serving as the starting goalie for the Mooseheads during Alexis Gravel's absence due to injury.
The Mooseheads' top line struck first when Maxim Trepanier scored at 4:58 of the opening period.
Sea Dogs rookie Joshua Roy tied the game just over a minute later with his fourth of the season at 6:05.
With under six minutes left in the period the Sea Dogs power play took the ice after Walter Flower was called for hooking Nicolas Guay behind the Mooseheads' net.
The Sea Dogs power play entered the game with the third best success rate in the QMJHL and the success continued as Ben Badalamenti jammed away at a loose puck in front of Cole McLaren for his fourth of the year to give Saint John the lead.
The lead was short lived though after Brady Burns had the puck bounce between his skates in the Sea Dogs' zone and Walter Flower recovered the loose puck in time to beat Bouthillier sending the game into the intermission tied 2-2.
Shots in the period were tied 10-10.
At 6:52 of the second Ben Badalamenti skated down the centre of the ice and wired one past McLaren for his second of the game putting the Sea Dogs back in front.
Saint John extended the lead to two at 10:41 when Dawson Stairs drew the Mooseheads towards their own net only to feed Charlie DesRoches on the backdoor who lasered a shot top shelf for his first of the season. DesRoches and Jérémie Poirier are now tied for second overall in the QMJHL for points by a defenceman, each with eight.
At 17:00 Nicolas Guay tried to clear the puck on his back hand but had the puck sail over the glass earning him a delay of game penalty. During the Mooseheads power play Justin Barron ripped a one timer past Bouthillier to cut the lead to one.
The third period saw a flurry of Mooseheads goals as Senna Peeters scored twice and Maxim Trepanier scored his second of the game to make it 6-4 Halifax.
Patrick Kyte went off at 17:00 for roughing after some aggressive play with Joshua Roy in the Mooseheads zone.
During the man-advantage Jérémie Poirier curled around the face-off dot and wristed the puck top corner to bring the Sea Dogs within one.
With the net empty for the extra attacker Saint John pushed and nearly tied the game on a tipped shot from the point but Halifax held on as time expired. 6-5 the final.
Zachary Bouthillier had 29 saves for Saint John.
