COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia third baseman Mark Vientos extended his hitting streak in Thursday night's 4-1 loss against Greenville. Vientos' streak now stands at nine games, a team-high for Fireflies players in 2019.
The base hit came in the fourth inning with Columbia (18-29) trailing the Drive (19-27), 3-1. Vientos was also responsible for the run scored by the Fireflies earlier in the game, a sacrifice fly that scored Ronny Mauricio in the opening frame.
An additional offensive standout for Columbia during the evening was Shervyen Newton, who recorded a pair of singles in four at-bats. It was the second baseman's second multi-hit game of 2019.
Many of the Fireflies bats were silenced by Greenville starter Brayan Bello (W, 2-3). The Dominican Republic native pitched 5.1 innings, and struck out eight Columbia hitters. Jose Butto (L, 0-6) pitched the first four frames for Columbia, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out two.
Fireflies lefty reliever Jake Simon delivered a scoreless relief outing on the mound. In his first appearance for the Fireflies in 2019, Simon went two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three.
