Victoria Seals News Release
Opening up a Canada Day long weekend homestand, the Victoria Seals hosted game one against the Tijuana Cimarrones along with BC Hydro Power Smart Fireworks Night on Wednesday. Handing the ball to Jason Kershner (3-3) for the start, the home side matched up against Matt Stone (0-1) on the mound for Tijuana.
Threatening with offense in the top of the second inning, it was the Cimarrones first on the board when Jamie McGraw drew a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to put the visitors on top 1-0. Pitching his way out of a second bases loaded situation in that same inning, Victoria's starter sent the Seals back to the bottom of the frame down by one.
After a lead-off single from Chris Van Rossum and a walk to Kyle Orr, Kershner then helped his own cause with his first hit of the season, and RBI single to put Victoria on the board. The next batter, Wilver Perez, promptly put the Seals in the driver seat, making it a 2-1 ball game with a run-scoring double.
With Tijuana evening the score on a base hit from Mark Samuelson in the top of the third, Victoria grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. A lead-off double courtesy of Terrence McClain, along with a base on balls to Josh Arhart, set up a three-run blast to left field from Brian Rios to put the home side up 5-2.
Before the frame was out, Orr's first hit as a Seal drove in Victoria's sixth run of the game and a sacrifice fly from Perez extended the Seals advantage to 7-2.
With Kershner cruising through seven complete innings on the mound, Victoria put the game away with a bases-loaded walk to Perez in the bottom of the seventh inning to cement an 8-2 lead. Handing the ball to Chris Bodishbaugh late, the Seals closed out the Cimarrones to queue up the fireworks with a franchise-record fifth consecutive win, an 8-2 final score.
Jason Kershner collected his fourth win on the year with a strong performance on the mound, while Stone fell to 0-2 with the loss. Brian Rios' three-run home run along with Wilver Perez' three runs batted in paced the Seals offense, while Mark Samuelson when 3-for-4 in a losing effort for Tijuana.
