Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Kicking off Canada Day celebrations a little early on Thursday afternoon, the Victoria Seals locked horns with the Tijuana Cimarrones in game two of a five-game set. Handing the ball to 2009 ace Isaac Hess (0-0) for the left-hander's first start of the season, Victoria matched up against Robert Enriquez (0-0) on the mound for Tijuana.

For the second game in a row it was the Cimarrones first to strike, using a walk to Eric Scriven and a single from Kit Pellow to set up a two-run double from Mark Samuelson. Tijuana would stretch their lead to 3-0 two batters later when Steven Wright cashed in another on a base hit to left.

Responding with a trio of their own in the bottom of the first, the Seals evened the game in their first set of batters. After Wilver Perez was hit by a pitch and Dale Swinford notched a double, Terrence McClain made it 3-1 with an RBI groundout before Josh Arhart's seventh home run of the season tied the game.

Coming back with a haymaker of their own, the Cimarrones restored their three-run lead with an run-scoring single from Scriven that set up a two-run blast off the bat of Jamie McGraw to put the visitors up 6-3.

Victoria then began to chip away at the lead, using a lead-off double from Matt Kavanaugh ahead of an RBI base hit courtesy of Wilver Perez to make it 6-4 after three innings. Drawing within a run in the fourth, Kavanuagh converted a lead-off walk into a 6-5 ball game when an extra-base hit from Perez scored the runner from second.

Knotting the score in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Seals capitalized on an error to Tijuana shortstop Odie Davis, sending Arhart home from third to even the score at 6-6.

But the Cimarrones would come right back to grab their third lead of the game in the top of the seventh, using a two-out walk to Jamie McGraw and a base hit from Pellow to set up another clutch hit from Samuelson and a 7-6 lead. With Andrew Demott on to pitch the final two innings, the Cimarrones polished off their sixth win of the season by a 7-6 final score at Royal Athletic Park.

Brian Oliver earned his first win of the season in relief for Tijuana, while Jeff Duda falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Another strong offensive outing from Mark Samuelson, who posted, three hits and three RBI's, led the way for the Cimarrones, while Josh Arhart went 3-for-4 in a losing effort for the Seals.
