Victoria Seals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Making their first trip of the year to Telus Field, the Victoria Seals opened up a three-game series against the Edmonton Capitals on Monday night. With the home side sending ace Lou Pote (1-0) to the hill, Victoria countered with Jino Gonzales (0-3) in game one.
Opening the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, the Capitals used a two-out double from Matt Rogelstad to set up an RBI single off the bat of Eric McNamee for an early 1-0 lead.
Answering back with offense of their own in the top of the third, the Seals grabbed a one-run lead when Josh Arhart put a man on base with a lead-off single. The next batter, Matt Kavanaugh, then launched his second career home run over the right field fence, handing Victoria a 2-0 advantage.
After four scoreless innings, the Capitals rallied to even the game in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Steve Brown reached on a single and was bunted to second by Ryan Stevenson before an infield error to Brian Rios on a ground ball from Alex Chavez brought the runner home, knotting the score at two.
The next Edmonton batter put the home side in front as Larry Bigbie drove home the Capitals' third run of the game on an RBI single, chasing Gonzalez from the game. Then, after a base hit courtesy of Tom Collaro and a walk to Jorge Cortes loaded the bases, Chris Bodishbaugh struck out McNamee to end the Edmonton threat.
Unable to muster a comeback in the top of the ninth, though, the Seals went down in order with Edmonton closer Chad Blackwell on the hill, losing the series opener by a 3-2 final score.
Capitals starter Lou Pote improved his record to 2-0 on the season with the victory, while Jino Gonzalez surrendered his fourth loss on the season despite an excellent performance on the mound. Seven hits from seven different batters was the story of the Edmonton offense, while the home run from Matt Kavanaugh served as the lone offensive highlight for the Seals.
The Seals resume their series against the Capitals tomorrow night with game two, a 6:00 p.m. (PT) start time at Telus Field. The contest will broadcast live via www.victoriaseals.ca.
